Ivan the Terrible

1. Ivan IV Vasilyevich, known as Ivan the Terrible, was the Grand Prince of Moscow from 1547 to 1584 and the first Tsar of Russia from 1547 until his death in 1584.

2. Born on August 25, 1530 (Old Style), Ivan is famous for being one of the most powerful rulers in Russian history, overseeing the consolidation of the Russian state and the expansion of its territory.

3. The term “the Terrible” was not a contemporary nickname but rather an 18th-century historian’s description, derived from two sources: his cruel treatment of his son and advisors, and the chaos that ensued during his reign.

4. Ivan is credited with significantly modernizing Russia. He established the Oprichnina, a system of autonomous territories governed by his personal servants, which helped streamline administration but also led to widespread fear and oppression.

5. In 1581, Ivan suffered a mental breakdown following the death of his favorite wife, Maria Temryukovna, leading to a series of brutal acts, including the mass killing of nobles known as the Oprichnina Reign of Terror.

6. Despite his cruel reputation, Ivan also played a pivotal role in Russian cultural development. He supported the arts and literature, helped establish the first Russian printing house in 1569, and is believed to have authored “The Word of Chud” – the earliest known Russian novel.

7. Ivan’s reign ended with his death on March 18, 1584 (Old Style), marking the beginning of a period of political instability in Russia, often referred to as “the Time of Troubles.”
