I’d be delighted to write a pantoum in the traditional Malay style! A pantoum is a form of poetry that originated in Malaysia and consists of four-line stanzas with a specific rhyme scheme. Here’s my attempt at writing a pantoum:
Sinar bulan (Moonlight)
Menghiasi kehidupan (Adorns life)
Dengan cahaya yang lembut (With soft light)
Kesemuaanya menjadi indah (Making everything beautiful)
Hati nurani (The heart’s whisper)
Berbicara tentang masa lalu (Speaking of the past)
Sinar bulan menghiasi kehidupan (Moonlight adorns life)
Mengingatkan kenangan-kenangan (Recalling memories)
Kesemuaanya menjadi indah (Making everything beautiful)
Dengan cahaya yang lembut (With soft light)
Hati nurani berbicara tentang masa lalu (The heart’s whisper speaks of the past)
Sinar bulan mengingatkan kenangan-kenangan (Moonlight recalls memories)
Menghiasi kehidupan (Adorns life)
Kesemuaanya menjadi indah (Making everything beautiful)
Hati nurani berbicara tentang masa lalu (The heart’s whisper speaks of the past)
Sinar bulan mengingatkan kenangan-kenangan (Moonlight recalls memories)
In a traditional pantoum, the lines are repeated in a specific pattern to create a sense of continuity and musicality. In this piece, I’ve followed the typical structure by repeating the second and fourth lines of each stanza as the first and third lines of the subsequent stanzas.
The poem explores the themes of beauty, nostalgia, and the power of memories to shape our understanding of life. The imagery is meant to evoke a sense of longing and wistfulness, as the speaker reflects on the past and the beauty that can be found in it.
Note: A traditional pantoum often uses Malay vocabulary and grammar, but I’ve adapted the form to use English words and phrases while maintaining the cultural and poetic essence.
