Ulysses S. Grant

1. Ulysses S. Grant was an American military officer and the 18th President of the United States. Born in 1822, he served as a Union general during the Civil War, eventually winning the war and becoming the President from 1869 to 1877.

1. Known for his simple lifestyle and honesty, Grant was nicknamed “Unconditional Surrender” Grant, which reflected his leadership style in battle. He is one of only two American presidents (Theodore Roosevelt being the other) who served as military commanders during wartime before assuming office.

2. Born Hiram Ulysses Grant, he legally changed his name to Ulysses S. Grant while serving in the Mexican–American War. The “S” stands for ‘Simpson’, referring to his father’s last name, but is sometimes mistaken as an initial.

3. As President, he focused on ending Reconstruction in the South and worked towards reconciling the nation after the Civil War. Grant also pushed for the abolition of slavery by signing into law the 15th Amendment, which allowed African American men to vote. Despite these accomplishments, his administration was marred by corruption scandals like the infamous Whiskey Ring scandal and his unsuccessful campaign against the Ku Klux Klan in the South.

4. Ulysses S. Grant passed away on July 23, 1885, at age 63 due to throat cancer. He was buried at the Grant Memorial in New York City but was later moved and reinterred beside his wife, Julia, at Grant’s Tomb in Riverside Park, New York.
