1. Pythagoras was an ancient Greek philosopher, mathematician and founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. He lived around 570 to 495 BCE.
- The most famous theorem associated with his name is the Pythagorean Theorem, which states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
- Although he is well known for this mathematical theorem, Pythagoras was also interested in astronomy, music theory, and philosophy. He founded the first Western philosophical system, which held that numbers are the building blocks of all things in existence.
The Pythagorean Brotherhood was an influential group of followers who shared his ideas and beliefs. They worshipped the mystical number five as a symbol for their unity.
Some of his teachings had an impact on the development of other philosophies, such as Platonism and Neoplatonism. Pythagorean concepts can also be found in modern sciences like quantum physics and relativity theory.
