Sushi


Sushi is a popular Japanese dish that consists of vinegared rice combined with various ingredients such as seafood, vegetables, and other tasty items. Here is a simple recipe to get you started:

  1. Prepare the sushi rice: Rinse 2 cups of short grain sushi rice until the water runs clear. Then, cook it according to package instructions using 2 cups of water. Once cooked, allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes with a damp cloth covering it.

  2. Make the sushi vinegar: In a small saucepan, combine 1/4 cup of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Heat until the sugar and salt dissolve. Allow to cool before adding it to the cooked rice.

  3. Mix the rice with the vinegar: Once the sushi rice has cooled slightly, gently fold in the sushi vinegar using a wooden spoon or spatula. Do not overmix.

  4. Prepare the fillings: Cut your chosen ingredients into thin, bite-sized pieces.

  5. Assemble the sushi rolls: Lay a sheet of nori shiny side down on a bamboo sushi mat (or a clean surface). Spread about 1/2 cup of sushi rice onto the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top uncovered. Place your fillings in a horizontal line across the center of the rice. Roll up the nori tightly using the bamboo mat or your hands. Use a little water to seal the seam.

  6. Cut the sushi rolls: Using a sharp knife, cut each roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi paste, and pickled ginger.
