In Italy, where beauty is adored,
A sonnet’s artful words are held in store
To woo with grace and win a lady’s heart
Or sing of love that’s evermore apart.
Four stanzas of three lines each begin
The rhythmic verse that sings a heart’s refrain,
The final couplet ending sweetly on
A phrase that leaves the listener longing on.
This form was born in Florence at the dawn
Of humanism, where words were highly wrought
To capture truth and beauty all in one
And make the heart both sing and be consoled.
So let me try my hand at this fair game,
To woo a lady’s heart, or simply claim
The love I hold within my heart, in rhyme
And leave it here as proof of what was mine.
You are the sun that shines upon my day,
My life, my hope, my guiding light away
From darkness and despair. Without your grace
I’d be a wanderer, lost in endless space.
Your love is like a flower in full bloom,
A treasure to be cherished, never broomed.
My heart is yours; you have my every vow,
And with my pen, I’ll make your love resound.
So let this sonnet serve as proof of love
That shall endure and conquer all above.
You are the star that lights my endless skies,
My heart’s desire, my soul’s eternal sighs.
And should I falter in these words I write,
Let love be my guide, and let our hearts unite.
For love is stronger than all other ties,
And shall endure through all eternities.
