A Chastushka! A traditional Russian folk poem with a unique structure and rhythm. Here’s my attempt:
Title: “Мечта о море” (“Dream of the Sea”)
Structure:
- 4-line stanza
- ABAB rhyme scheme (first and third lines rhyme, second and fourth lines rhyme)
- 8-syllable lines (unstressed syllable followed by stressed syllable)
Text:
В снах я иду к морю,
Бережёт его высокий вал,
Озаряемый солнцем ров,
Я встречу свой путь, не упал.
In dreams I go to the sea,
Guarded by its high wall,
Illuminated by sun’s ray,
I’ll meet my path, not to fall.
Explanation:
In a Chastushka, the first line sets the scene or introduces the theme. The second line develops the idea or provides contrast. The third line often adds more depth or emotion. The fourth line concludes the stanza with a twist, a revelation, or a sense of closure.
In “Мечта о море”, I’ve tried to capture the longing for the sea and the freedom it represents. The poem is about following one’s dreams and not giving up.
Please note that Chastushkas are often humorous or lighthearted, but I’ve chosen a more contemplative theme for this poem.
