Thank you for the challenge! A Chastushka is a traditional Russian folk song with a specific structure and style. Here’s my attempt at writing one:
Title: “Вечерний звон” (Vechernii zvon) – “Evening Bell”
Structure:
- Four lines, followed by four lines
- Rhyme scheme: ABAB CDCD
Lyrics:
As the evening bell rings out so clear,
The city’s noise and worries disappear.
In quiet contemplation, I remain,
And let my thoughts of love and longing reign.
In the moonlit garden, shadows play,
Whispers of memories come what may.
My heart beats fast, like a bird in flight,
Yearning for the one who makes it right.
Note: Chastushkas often have a storytelling quality, so I’ve tried to weave a simple narrative into my poem. The first four lines set the scene, while the second four explore the speaker’s emotions and longings.
