Pain au chocolat, also known as chocolate croissants or chocolate rolls, are a delicious French pastry made with layers of flaky puff pastry dough filled with rich chocolate. These indulgent treats have become a staple in many bakeries around the world. The soft and buttery dough combined with the smooth and creamy chocolate make for an irresistible combination that is perfect for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.
To prepare your own Pain au chocolat at home, you will need:
Ingredients:
– 1 sheet of all-butter puff pastry
– 50 grams of bittersweet chocolate
– 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, softened
– 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
– 1 egg, beaten
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC).
2. Unroll the puff pastry sheet onto a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the dough to increase its size slightly.
3. In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter and sugar until it forms a smooth paste.
4. Break the chocolate into small pieces and spread them evenly over the puff pastry sheet.
5. Spread the butter-sugar mixture on top of the chocolate, leaving a small border around the edges of the pastry.
6. Starting from one of the short sides of the rectangle, tightly roll up the pastry into a log, making sure to seal the edges as you go.
7. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 8 even pieces.
8. Place the pain au chocolat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each roll with the beaten egg.
9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
10. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade pain au chocolat!
