3. Known as “The Bull Moose” during his campaign due to his strength and aggressiveness, Cleveland lost his re-election bid in 1888 but won the presidency four years later. This unusual sequence of events earned him the nickname “Unconditional Surrender Cleveland.”

During his first term, Cleveland was known for his honesty and integrity, earning him the sobriquet “Vice President Grover Cleveland” when he ran as a Democrat against fellow Democrat Benjamin Harrison. 5. Cleveland was a strong advocate for civil service reform and worked to reduce corruption in government. He signed into law the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883, which established a merit-based system for federal employment, reducing political patronage.

6. As governor of New York before his presidency, Cleveland gained national attention when he refused to pardon convicted murderer William “Big Bill” Dangerfield, despite pressure from supporters. This decision further enhanced his reputation for integrity and impartiality.
