Queen Nefertiti

1. Nefertiti was an Egyptian queen who lived during the 18th Dynasty, around 1370-1330 BC, and is best known for her beauty and power.

1. She was the Great Royal Wife (chief wife) of Pharaoh Akhenaten, who introduced a new religious system centered on the sun disk Aten. Their partnership marked a significant shift in Egyptian history, moving away from traditional polytheism towards monotheistic worship.

2. Nefertiti’s reign peaked during the fourth year of her husband’s rule, when she served as regent or co-regent for young King Tutankhamun (then known as Tutankhaten). This makes her one of the few women in history to have wielded such political power.

3. Despite her prominence, very little is known about Nefertiti’s early life and family background due to sparse historical records from that era. Much of what we know comes from archaeological findings and artifacts.

4. The most famous representation of Nefertiti is the bust now held in Berlin’s Neues Museum, which was discovered in 1912 by German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt. The bust is made of limestone and dates back to approximately 1340 BC.

5. Nefertiti disappears from historical records after her husband’s death, around 1336 BC. Her fate remains unknown; theories range from her becoming a full pharao, living in seclusion as a nun, or possibly even being killed by Akhenaten’s successor, Tutankhamun.

6. Despite being married to Akhenaten for about 20 years, Nefertiti and Akhenaten had only one daughter, Meritaten. After Meritaten, Akhenaten fathered children with his second wife Kiya.

7. Nefertiti’s name translates to “A beautiful woman has come,” a testament to her renowned beauty in ancient Egyptian culture.
