1. George III was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 25 October 1760 until his death on 29 January 1820. He was the first Hanoverian monarch to be born in England.
- His reign saw significant social, political and cultural changes in the country including the Industrial Revolution. The American Revolution also took place during George III’s time, culminating with the loss of the American colonies.
During his later years, George III suffered from a mental illness known as porphyria, which led to a regency period where his son, Prince Regent (later King George IV), took control of governmental affairs.
Aside from politics, George III was an accomplished musician and played the flute, harpsichord, and organ. He was also an amateur painter and patronized various arts and sciences during his time.
At one point in his reign, George III’s popularity waned due to criticism over his rule which led to the birth of anti-monarchical sentiment. However, he remained devoted to his duty and faith throughout his life.
