Koulouri is a popular Greek street food that is similar to a bagel or pretzel. It is typically made with yeasted dough that is boiled before baking, resulting in a chewy texture with a slightly crispy crust. Koulouri can be plain or topped with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or other flavorings.
Ingredients:
– 500 grams all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon instant yeast
– 2 tablespoons sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 375 ml warm water
– 1 egg, beaten
– Sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping (optional)
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
2. Add the warm water and mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions.
6. Roll each portion into a long rope, about 30 cm long and 2 cm thick. Join the ends to form a circle, making sure there are no gaps in the dough.
7. Place the koulouri on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each one with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds if desired.
8. Let the koulouri rise again for about 30 minutes.
9. Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F).
10. Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Add the koulouri one at a time and cook for about 1 minute on each side, or until they are slightly puffed up. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the water and place them back on the baking sheet.
11. Bake the koulouri in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
12. Remove the koulouri from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your homemade Greek koulouri!
