A challenge! Here’s my attempt at a traditional sonnet:
In twilight’s hush, where shadows softly fall,
Amidst the whispers of a forgotten wall,
I find myself lost in thoughts of thee,
And all the memories that we used to be.
The stars above, like diamonds in the sky,
Reflect the tears I’ve cried, and the heartache nigh;
Yet still, I hold on to love’s sweet sigh,
And cherish every moment we got by.
But alas, our love was not meant to last,
For fate had other plans, and now it’s past;
I’m left with just a longing, and this verse at last,
To express the ache that your departure cast.
So let me pour my heart out on these pages wide,
And hope that someday, you’ll be by my side.
This sonnet follows the traditional European structure of:
- 14 lines, divided into four quatrains (four-line stanzas) and a final couplet (two-line stanza)
- A rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
- Written in iambic pentameter, with five feet (syllables) per line
I hope this meets your expectations!
