1. Maurice Hilleman was an American microbiologist and medical researcher who made significant contributions to the field of vaccinology. He is often referred to as the “father of vaccines” due to his development or improvement of nine of the 14 vaccines routinely recommended in the United States.
- Hilleman discovered or co-discovered vaccines for measles, mumps, hepatitis B, meningitis, pneumonia (Streptococcus pneumoniae), and other diseases. His work has saved millions of lives worldwide by preventing these illnesses.
He spent his entire 40-year career at Merck & Co., where he began working as a researcher in 1946. Despite not having a formal college education (he dropped out of high school), Hilleman rose to become one of the company’s top scientists and vice president.
Maurice Hilleman was awarded numerous honors for his work, including the Presidential National Medal of Science in 1984 and the Lurie Prize in Biomedical Research in 2003. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also named the Maurice Hilleman Laboratory of Vaccine Sciences in his honor.
Despite his immense contributions, Hilleman remained relatively unknown to the public during his lifetime. This was partly because he preferred working behind the scenes and focusing on scientific advancements rather than personal recognition. His story gained more widespread attention posthumously.
