Assemble the sandwich: Place one slice of ham on the buttered side of one slice of bread. Top with cheese slices. Add any optional ingredients like tomato or lettuce if desired. Place the second slice of ham on top, followed by the second slice of bread, butter-side out.
Grill the sandwich: Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the pan and cook until golden brown on one side, about 2-3 minutes. Use a spatula to press down gently and check for browning.
