Chicken Gyros: A Delicious Mediterranean Delight
Chicken gyros is a popular Mediterranean dish that has taken the world by storm with its tantalizing flavors and convenient, fast-casual dining appeal. Originating from Greece, this meal consists of thin slices of tender chicken meat stacked high on a warm pita bread, accompanied by a variety of fresh vegetables, tangy tzatziki sauce, and often served with fries or a side salad. The combination of spices and the slow-roasted chicken make it a truly satisfying and flavorful experience.
Recipe: Chicken Gyros
Ingredients:
- 1.5 lbs (700g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 cup (240ml) plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1 tsp dried dill
- 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
- 4-6 pita breads
- Lettuce leaves
- Tomatoes, sliced
- Pickles, sliced (optional)
- French fries or a side salad (for serving)
Instructions:
- Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine olive oil, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Add the chicken pieces and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for better flavors.
Prepare Tzatziki Sauce: In a small bowl, mix plain yogurt, lemon juice, crushed garlic, and dried dill until well combined. Chill while you prepare the chicken.
Cook the Chicken: Heat a large grill pan or outdoor grill over medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade ( reserving the leftover marinade) and cook for 5-7 minutes per side, or until cooked through and nicely browned. Let rest for a few minutes before slicing thinly.
Prepare Vegetables: While the chicken is cooking, slice the red onion into thin rounds.
Assemble Gyros: Warm the pita breads in a dry pan over medium heat for about 30 seconds on each side, or according to package instructions. Slice the cooked chicken thinly across the grain. Layer lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, pickles (if using), sliced red onion, and chicken in the pita bread. Drizzle some of the reserved marinade over the top, then add a dollop of tzatziki sauce.
Serve: Cut the gyros in half if desired and serve immediately with French fries or a side salad on the side. Enjoy your delicious Mediterranean-style meal!
