
Flan is a rich and creamy dessert that originated in Spain. It consists of a caramel sauce on the bottom and a smooth custard on top. The texture is silky, with a slight jiggle when shaken. Flan is a popular dessert throughout Latin America and has many variations depending on the region.
Ingredients:
– 1 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
– 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
– 1 can (14 oz) evaporated milk
– 6 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1 cinnamon stick
– 1 star anise
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
2. In a heavy saucepan, heat the granulated sugar over medium heat until it melts and becomes a golden amber color.
3. Pour the caramelized sugar into an 8-inch round baking dish and tilt the dish to evenly coat the bottom with the caramel. Set aside.
4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon stick, and star anise until well combined.
5. Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish over the caramelized sugar.
6. Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan filled with 1 inch of hot water. This will create a water bath that helps prevent the flan from cracking while cooking.
7. Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the custard is set but still has a slight jiggle in the center.
8. Remove the baking dish from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature.
9. Once the flan has cooled, refrigerate it for at least 3 hours or overnight.
10. To serve, run a knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the flan. Invert the baking dish onto a serving platter to release the flan.
11. Garnish with additional caramel sauce if desired and enjoy!
