1. Hans von Ohain (August 26, 1911 – January 14, 1994) was a German engineer and aviation pioneer who is recognized as one of the inventors of the jet engine.
- Born in Darmstadt, Germany, von Ohain studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich, graduating in 1932.
After graduation, he continued his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship, earning a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1935.
Von Ohain, along with British engineer Sir Frank Whittle, independently developed and patented the first operational jet engine. He successfully tested his design, the “HeS 3,” on May 27, 1939.
During World War II, von Ohain served in the Luftwaffe as a test pilot and engineer. After Germany’s surrender, he was held captive by the British for a short time before being released due to his key role in jet engine development.
Post-war, von Ohain emigrated to the United States where he worked with General Electric and later founded the company “Aerojet” which specialized in rocket and jet engine technology.
He was awarded the prestigious National Aeronautics Association Collier Trophy in 1945 for his contributions to aviation, becoming the first non-American to receive this honor.
