About Fried Cheese:
Fried cheese is a delightful and indulgent dish that transforms simple cheese into a crispy, golden treat. It’s a classic comfort food, loved for its contrasting textures—the soft, creamy cheese contrasts beautifully with the crunchy exterior when fried. Typically made with a variety of cheeses like mozzarella, cheddar, or even feta, it’s often served as an appetizer or snack, capturing the hearts (and taste buds) of many.
Recipe: Fried Cheese
Ingredients:
– 10 oz (280g) shredded cheese (such as mozzarella, cheddar, or a mix)
– 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
– 1 tsp salt
– ½ tsp black pepper
– 1 cup cold beer or buttermilk
– Vegetable oil for frying
– Optional: Dipping sauce of your choice (e.g., marinara, ranch, or honey mustard)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cheese Mix: In a large bowl, combine the shredded cheese with ½ cup of flour, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the cheese is evenly coated. Set aside.
-
Make the Batter: In another bowl, whisk together the remaining 1.5 cups of flour, cold beer or buttermilk, and any remaining salt and pepper to make a smooth batter.
-
Heat Oil: Fill a deep skillet or fryer with about 2 inches of vegetable oil and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a tiny bit of flour into the oil; it should sizzle and bubble immediately.
-
Fry Cheese: Working in batches, dip each cheese piece into the batter, making sure it’s fully coated. Then, carefully place the coated cheese into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy on all sides. Use a slotted spoon to flip them halfway through cooking to ensure even browning.
-
Drain: Once fried, remove the cheese pieces from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to absorb any excess grease.
-
Serve: Transfer the fried cheese to a serving plate and serve immediately with your choice of dipping sauce. Enjoy while still crispy!
These crispy treats are best served fresh out of the fryer, but they can also be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
