Grover Cleveland

Comments Off on Grover Cleveland

1. Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th President of the United States, serving non-consecutive terms (1885–1889 and 1893–1897). This makes him one of two presidents to serve in this manner, the other being Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Vice President, Richard Nixon.

  1. Cleveland is the only U.S. president to have been married while in office; he wed Frances Folsom, his former deceased guardian’s daughter, in 1886. At the time, she was the youngest First Lady in history at age 21.

  2. Known as “Virginia Cleveland” during her husband’s first term due to her preference for privacy, Frances Cleveland is also recognized as the only First Lady to give birth while in the White House (in 1893). Their daughter, Esther, was born there.

  3. Grover Cleveland was born in New Jersey but raised in upstate New York. He worked various jobs including shoe-making and teaching before entering politics. His reputation for honesty earned him the nickname “Unconditional Surrender” Cleveland, which he disliked.

  4. Cleveland is remembered for his strong stance against corruption in government, leading to his inclusion on Mount Rushmore’s list of Presidents considered for sculpting on the monument. He was also a champion of civil service reform and played a key role in the passage of the Interstate Commerce Act.

  5. Despite his popularity and political achievements, Cleveland lost his bid for a third term in 1892 to Benjamin Harrison due to economic downturns during his second term, particularly the Panic of 1893. He returned to private life after leaving office but ran again in 1896 and won, making him the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms.
