Neat-GNU/Linux was a unique Linux distribution that aimed to differentiate itself from others through its installation procedure and package selection. Rather than copying precompiled packages, the installation involved compiling software from source, resulting in a system tailored specifically to the user’s needs. This approach also helped to keep the number of packages minimal, making the system easier to maintain and requiring less storage space.
In addition to this, Neat-GNU/Linux included configuration scripts for various administrative tasks like setting up the network, which made it more user-friendly and efficient to manage. However, despite its innovative features, the distribution is no longer available as of December 2002. Its unique approach to package management and installation may have been ahead of its time, but unfortunately, it was not able to gain enough traction in the Linux community to continue development.
