About Baklava
Baklava is a sweet and nutty pastry dessert that originates from the Middle East. It’s made with layers of flaky phyllo dough, crispy nuts, and sweet honey syrup. The combination of textures and flavors makes it a popular treat in many cultures, particularly during special occasions and celebrations.
Recipe: Classic Baklava
Ingredients:
For the Phyllo Dough:
- 1 package of phyllo dough (usually found in the freezer section)
- 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted
For the Nut Filling:
- 1 cup of chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup of chopped pistachios
- 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
For the Honey Syrup:
- 1 cup of honey
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions.
- In a large bowl, mix together the chopped nuts, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
- To assemble the baklava, place one sheet of phyllo dough on a flat surface and brush with some of the melted butter. Repeat this process until you have used half of the phyllo dough.
- Sprinkle half of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo layers.
- Repeat steps 4-5 to create another layer of phyllo, nuts, and butter.
- Cut the baklava into diamond-shaped pieces or squares, depending on your preference.
- Bake the baklava for 45-50 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and crispy.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the honey syrup by combining the honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Remove the baklava from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the warm honey syrup evenly over the top of the baklava.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. It’s best served at room temperature or chilled.
