A Senryu! A traditional Japanese poetry form, distinct from Haiku. Here’s my attempt:
Snowflakes gently fall
Blanketing the garden gray
Lonely winter sigh
Notes on Senryu composition guidelines:
- Consists of three lines, with a syllable count of 5-7-5.
- Typically focuses on human nature, emotions, or social situations, rather than natural imagery (like Haiku).
- May use humor, irony, or satire to convey its message.
- Often features a “cutting word” (kireji) at the end of the poem, which adds a sense of tension or finality.
In this Senryu, I’ve tried to capture a wistful winter scene, with the snowfall serving as a backdrop for a lonely and contemplative mood.
