1. What is Halwa?
Halwa is a traditional Indian sweet dish made from semolina, sugar, ghee (clarified butter), and various nuts and raisins. It has a soft and moist consistency and is flavored with cardamom and saffron, giving it an aromatic and delicious taste. This dessert is popular in many parts of India and is often served during festivals, special occasions, or as a sweet treat after meals.
- How to make Halwa?
Ingredients:
– 1 cup fine semolina (rava)
– 1 1/2 cups sugar
– 3/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
– 1/4 cup milk
– 1/4 cup chopped nuts (almonds, pistachios, cashews)
– 1/4 cup raisins
– A pinch of cardamom powder
– A few strands of saffron
– Water as needed
Instructions:
- Heat ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add the chopped nuts and raisins, and sautรฉ them until they turn golden brown. Remove the nuts and raisins from the pan and set them aside.
- In the same pan, add the semolina and roast it on low heat, stirring continuously, for about 5-6 minutes or until it turns light golden brown.
- Add the milk to the semolina and mix well. Cook the mixture for a few minutes until the milk is absorbed by the semolina.
- Add water to the pan, a little at a time, stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming. Keep adding water until the semolina is fully cooked and has a soft, moist consistency.
- Once the halwa is fully cooked, add sugar, cardamom powder, and saffron strands. Mix well and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Finally, add the roasted nuts and raisins to the pan and mix them into the halwa. Cook for an additional minute or two to let the flavors meld together.
- Transfer the halwa to a serving dish and let it cool slightly before serving. Garnish with more chopped nuts and saffron strands, if desired.
Enjoy your delicious homemade Halwa! This traditional Indian sweet is sure to satisfy your cravings for something sweet and indulgent.
