Metaxa is a Greek liquor that is often served as an after-dinner drink. It has a unique flavor profile, combining brandy with wine, herbs, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. The result is a rich and warming drink that pairs well with desserts like baklava or chocolate cake.
To cook Metaxa, you can use it in various recipes to add depth of flavor. Here’s one recipe for a classic Greek dessert, Baklava:
Ingredients:
– 1 lb phyllo dough
– 2 cups unsalted butter, melted
– 5 cups chopped walnuts or pistachios
– 3 cups sugar
– 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
– 1 tsp ground cloves
– 1 tsp ground cardamom
– 1 cup Metaxa
– 1 cup honey
– 1 cup water
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Butter a large baking dish or pan.
2. Lay out one sheet of phyllo dough and brush it with melted butter. Repeat until you have 8 sheets, then sprinkle them evenly with chopped nuts.
3. Add another layer of 6 buttered sheets, followed by another layer of nuts. Continue layering in this manner until you run out of phyllo or nuts, ending with a top layer of buttered phyllo.
4. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes, making sure to cut all the way through the layers.
5. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Add Metaxa, honey, and water, then heat over medium-high heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is simmering.
6. Pour the syrup evenly over the baklava, making sure to cover all the pieces.
7. Bake the baklava for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown on top.
8. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. This will give it time to absorb the syrup and develop its full flavor profile.
Enjoy your Metaxa-infused baklava with a glass of Metaxa on the side for an authentic Greek experience!
