Fair Muse, I shall attempt this task with care,
And fashion forth a sonnet, as is fair.
In fourteen lines, with rhyme and meter true,
I’ll craft a poem, worthy of your scrutiny.
In twilight’s hush, where shadows dance and play,
Amidst the trees, a secret love doth lay,
A gentle breeze that whispers sweet despair,
And in its sighs, my heart doth wildly sway.
The stars above, like diamonds in the sky,
Do twinkle bright, as tears fall from my eye,
For in this moment, all my passions cry,
“O, fairest love, how dearly I would buy
Thy kiss, thy touch, thy loving, tender sigh.”
But alas, fate doth not grant me this wish,
And so I’ll cherish thee, in silent, bitter bliss.
Note: A traditional sonnet is a 14-line poem, written in iambic pentameter, with a specific rhyme scheme. There are two main forms of sonnets: the Shakespearean sonnet, which consists of 14 lines and follows the rhyme scheme ABAB CDCD EFEF GG; and the Italian sonnet, which also has 14 lines, but follows the rhyme scheme ABBA ABBA CDCD CD. This poem is written in the style of an Italian sonnet, with a slight modern twist.
