Who: Theseus (also known as Theseus of Athens) was a legendary hero in ancient Greek mythology.

When: His story dates back to the 5th century BC, during the Golden Age of Athens.

What: Theseus was said to be the son of King Aegeus and Queen Aethra. He is famous for slaying the Minotaur, half-man half-bull, in the Labyrinth (a complex maze designed by Daedalus) on Crete. This mythological feat was seen as a great accomplishment.

Why: Theseus’ victory over the Minotaur helped to end the long-standing suffering of Athens, which had been forced to send young men and women as sacrifices to the Minotaur every nine years.
