1. Indira Gandhi was India’s only female Prime Minister, serving three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.
2. Born on November 19th, 1917, Indira Gandhi was the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
3. She played a significant role in leading India to victory during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation.
4. In her second term (1980-1984), she emphasized socialism and prioritized economic growth while working towards modernization and national unity.
5. Despite her legacy as a strong leader, Indira Gandhi was also known for imposing the Emergency in India from 1975 to 1977, which suppressed civil liberties and curtailed press freedom.
