2. Famous for: Michelangelo is one of the greatest artists of all time, known chiefly for his work in painting, sculpture and architecture. His best-known works are statues David and Pieta, along with paintings on the Sistine Chapel ceiling like The Creation of Adam.
3. Significant period: Michelangelo’s works span over four major periods; Early Florence (1489 – 1496), Rome under Pope Julius II (1501 – 1508), Rome under Pope Leo X (1509-1520) and Final Florentine period (1524-1534).
4. Architecture: Apart from his artistic masterpieces, Michelangelo also designed several notable buildings like St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He is often referred to as an architectural genius too.
5. Medici Patronage: His early career was funded and promoted by the powerful Medici family of Florence.
