1. Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States and served from 1945 to 1953. He succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt when he passed away, becoming president through succession.
2. Born on May 8, 1884, in Lamar, Missouri, Truman was raised by his mother after his father died. His middle initial ‘S’ stood for ‘Sidney’, his deceased brother’s name.
3. He served in World War I and was a US Army Captain when he was hit by a mustard gas attack. After the war, he worked as an independent farmer and later as a judge, county clerk, and later as the city judge of Independence, Missouri.
4. Truman’s most significant legacy is his involvement in the development and use of the atomic bomb, which was used against Japan during World War II. The bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th and Nagasaki on August 9th, led to the surrender of Japan, ending the war.
5. Truman faced a major challenge in his presidency with the onset of the Cold War, which began after World War II ended. He initiated the Marshall Plan for European economic recovery and also founded NATO, an alliance of Western nations to deter Soviet aggression.
